Program Highlights

The Earthkeepers program was developed by The Institute for Earth Education and is offered in several locations in the United States and other countries. Earthkeepers was developed for upper elementary students with the goal of increasing their knowledge about four ecological concepts (energy flow, cycling, interrelationships, and change) and deepening their feelings for the Earth through activities that deal with observation, discovery, solitude, and immersion.

LET THE JOURNEY BEGIN

The program begins when a map and letter of invitation arrive at the school inviting students to become Earthkeepers. Two weeks after this, the students stay at the Cooper Center for 3 days and 2 nights, participating in experiences that increase ecological knowledge and deepen their feelings for the Earth.

UNLOCKING THE SECRETS

As the students complete various stages of learning that help them to become Earthkeepers, they will receive keys that unlock specially-made boxes that reveal the secrets to becoming an Earthkeepers. During the 3 days at the Cooper Center, students earn their “K” key for Knowledge and their “E” key for Experience.

HOME & SCHOOL COMPONENT

The rest of the program takes place back at home and school over the course of several weeks. With the help of their families, teachers, and classmates, students complete tasks to earn their “Y” Key for Yourself and their “S” Key for Sharing, and then open the boxes that reveal the final 2 secrets!
